Denise M. Mandel Exhibit
ARCHIVED

Saturday, April 21 through Sunday, April 29
Farley's Music Hall
37 Mill Street
11 am to 8 pm

Fiber artist Denise Mandel will be exhibiting her contemporary fine art
tapestries at a special exhibit sponsored by the Historic Elsah
Foundation. Mandel, who wove a papal tapestry for Pope John Paul II,
began weaving fiber art 35 years ago and began teaching 25 years ago at
Craft Alliance in University City, Mo., where she became the head of the
weaving department 15 years ago. Mandel’s woven images in the show will
include the Piasa bird, “The 4 Yei’s,” a self-portrait, and various
geometric designs influenced by Southwest, Native American and other
cultural references. She will show 18 pieces in the show, which will
have an opening reception from 6 pm to 9 pm, Friday, April 20.
Jerseyville bluegrass group Hickory Grove will perform at the reception
which is free and open to the public.
In 1998, Mandel was asked to create to create a papal tapestry for the
pope’s 1999 visit to St. Louis. Her piece, the papal coat of arms is now
a permanent hanging at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. More
recently Mandel’s motivation has gone toward large works, which led her
to look for a venue for an exhibition. While passing by Farley Music
Hall in Elsah last September she peeked inside and “It dawned on me that
it could work,” she said. “The elegantly rustic look of the place works
with lots of Southwest and even contemporary colors.” She first wanted
to commemorate the town by weaving images of houses and structures
within the community, but she realized she did not have the time.
Instead she came up with the idea to create a woven image of the
legendary and mythical Piasa bird.
With photographed images from which Mandel made mini-weavings, she
created commemorative Elsah bookmarks by photocopying the weavings and
laminating the paper images. Each bookmark features the name of the town
and dates of the show and will be on sale during the exhibition. Mandel
will hold a silent auction throughout the exhibit for three weavings
from the show, among them the Piasa bird. The winner will be announced
at a closing reception from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at
Farley Music Hall, where harpist Marilyn Bennet of St. Louis will play.
The winner need not be present to win.
